Agii Theodori

The island of Agii Theodori, also known as Thodorou, is a small uninhabited islet nestled just off the coast of Chania, Crete. A protected nature reserve and home to the rare Cretan wild goat, the Kri-Kri, it combines breathtaking natural scenery with centuries of history — from Venetian fortresses to pristine turquoise waters that draw snorkelers and boat trippers from across the island.

Agii Theodori — A Wild Island Reserve Off the Coast of Chania

Rising dramatically from the waters of the Bay of Chania, Agii Theodori is one of Crete’s most distinctive landmarks. The islet is a strictly protected nature reserve, its rocky interior and scrubby hillsides providing a safe haven for wildlife that has largely disappeared from the Cretan mainland. Its Venetian ruins and crystal-clear surrounding waters make it equally compelling for history lovers and sea explorers.

What you'll find?

Kri-Kri Wild Goats

Agii Theodori is one of the last refuges of the Kri-Kri, the endangered Cretan wild goat, which roams the island freely under strict protection. Spotting these agile, sure-footed animals picking their way along the clifftops is one of the most memorable wildlife encounters in Crete. The island’s isolation from the mainland has allowed the population to thrive away from human disturbance.

Venetian Fortress Ruins

The remnants of a Venetian fortress cling to the island’s rocky terrain, built centuries ago to defend the coastline against pirate raids. These weathered stone fortifications offer a vivid glimpse into the island’s strategic maritime past and the broader Venetian legacy across Crete. The ruins blend seamlessly into the rugged landscape, making them as visually striking as they are historically significant.

Snorkeling & Crystal-Clear Waters

The waters surrounding Agii Theodori are exceptionally clear, with visibility reaching several metres down into the rocky seabed below. The underwater terrain is rich with marine life, making it a rewarding spot for snorkeling during boat excursions that pass or anchor nearby. The sheltered coves around the islet offer calm conditions ideal for a refreshing swim.

Boat Trips from Platanias

Since landing on the island is restricted to protect the wildlife, the best way to experience Agii Theodori is by boat. Regular excursions depart from Platanias and the wider Chania area, circling the islet and offering close-up views of its dramatic cliffs, fortress ruins, and resident Kri-Kri. A short crossing that rewards with some of the most striking scenery in western Crete.

Whether you’re drawn by its wildlife, its history, or simply the beauty of its turquoise surroundings, Agii Theodori is an unmissable landmark on any visit to the Chania coast.
