View of the pristine beaches and turquoise coves of Seitan Limania on Crete's southern coast.

Seitan Limania

Seitan Limania — "Devil's Ports" — is one of Crete's most dramatic beaches, carved into the Akrotiri Peninsula's wild coastline just a short drive from Chania. Hidden between sheer limestone cliffs that plunge into impossibly turquoise water, its raw beauty has made it one of the most photographed spots in all of Greece.

A Hidden Cove Between Heaven and the Deep Blue

Seitan Limania — "Devil's Ports" — sits on the northeastern tip of the Akrotiri Peninsula, roughly 20 kilometres from Chania. Sheer limestone cliffs plunge into some of the most vivid turquoise water in all of Greece, forming a narrow gorge that opens dramatically onto the Cretan Sea. Raw, dramatic, and endlessly photogenic, it is one of the most iconic spots in Crete.

What you'll find?

Towering Limestone Cliffs

The beach is flanked by pale limestone walls sculpted over millennia by wind and sea, creating a sheltered gorge that feels almost otherworldly. The cliffs extend below the waterline, revealing underwater passages and ledges for those who venture in. Their sheer scale and colour — shifting from white to amber in the afternoon light — make them as spectacular as any natural gallery.

Crystal-Clear Water & Snorkelling

The water takes on an extraordinary range of blues and greens — deep sapphire at the centre, electric turquoise in the shallows — with visibility regularly exceeding 20 metres. The rocky seabed shelters sea urchins, small fish, and occasional octopus, making snorkelling exceptionally rewarding. The protected position of the cove means the water is usually flat and clear to the bottom.

The Hike Down

Reaching the beach requires a 10–15 minute descent on a steep path from the informal parking area above, requiring sure footing, especially on the return climb in midday heat. There are no facilities at the bottom, so bring water, food, and sun protection. The effort is richly rewarded the moment the cove reveals itself below.

Boat Access

Several operators in Chania and Marathi include Seitan Limania on their coastal cruises, and arriving by sea offers the most spectacular first impression — the cliff walls frame the entrance like the mouth of a canyon. Visiting by boat also bypasses the hike entirely, allowing you to swim ashore and savour the atmosphere. Early morning arrivals, by land or water, are rewarded with calm water and soft golden light.

Whether approached by land or water, Seitan Limania leaves a lasting impression — one of those places in Crete that stays with you long after you have left the island.
