Karga Island
A tiny uninhabited islet just off the coast of Almyrida, reachable by a short swim or boat ride, with crystal-clear waters ideal for snorkelling.
Karga Island — A Tiny Islet for Snorkellers and Explorers
Karga is a small, rocky islet sitting just a few hundred metres offshore from Almyrida village. Uninhabited and largely untouched, it is a popular day destination for snorkellers, swimmers, and those arriving by kayak or boat who want to explore its rocky shores and underwater world.
What you'll find?
Snorkelling
The waters around Karga Island are some of the clearest in the area, with rocky seabeds that shelter a variety of marine life. Octopus, sea bream, and schools of small fish are common sights, and the visibility is often excellent, making it a rewarding spot for snorkellers of all levels.
Boat or Swim Access
The islet is close enough to Almyrida beach to reach by a short open-water swim, or you can paddle out by kayak. Local boat trips from Almyrida and nearby Kalyves also stop here, making it accessible even for non-swimmers who want to enjoy the scenery from the water.
Rocky Shores
Karga's rugged limestone shoreline offers natural ledges and flat rocks ideal for sunbathing, drying off between dips, and exploring the tideline. The views back toward the Cretan coast and the White Mountains rising inland are particularly striking from here.
Karga Island is a quick, rewarding adventure from Almyrida — bring your snorkel and spend a relaxed morning exploring the underwater world around the islet.
