Pink Sand & Turquoise Lagoon

The beach's signature feature is its extraordinary sand — fine, pale, and shot through with pink tones created by the natural accumulation of crushed pink shells and coral. The shallow lagoon between beach and island can be waded across at low water, offering an experience unlike any other beach on Crete.

Elafonisi Islet

The small uninhabited islet of Elafonisi lies just offshore, connected to the main beach by the lagoon. The islet has its own beaches, rocks, and coves to explore, and the walk across the lagoon to reach it is one of the iconic activities at this location.

Protected Nature Reserve

The entire Elafonisi area is a protected Natura 2000 site, home to rare plant species, nesting sea turtles, and rich coastal flora. Access is managed to protect the ecosystem, and facilities on the beach are deliberately limited to preserve the natural character of the area.

Elafonisi is best visited early in the morning or late afternoon to enjoy the landscape without the crowds — and to see the pink sand glow at its most vivid in the golden hour light.
