Marmara beach
A secluded white-pebble beach at the mouth of the Aradena Gorge, carpeted in polished marble stones and accessible by boat or a challenging coastal hike.
Marmara Beach — Marble Stones at the Foot of the Aradena Gorge
Marmara beach sits at the dramatic exit point of the Aradena Gorge, where the gorge trail meets the Libyan Sea. The beach takes its name from the Greek word for marble — the shoreline is covered in smooth white and grey pebbles of polished limestone and marble washed down from the gorge over millennia, creating a strikingly beautiful and unusual seascape.
What you'll find?
Marble & White Pebbles
The beach is carpeted in smooth, rounded pebbles of pale marble and limestone — a direct result of the Aradena Gorge geology. Walking barefoot on the stones and watching the waves polish them in the clear water is a tactile and visual experience unlike any other beach on Crete.
Aradena Gorge Exit
Marmara is the traditional end point for hikers completing the Aradena Gorge trail, one of the most dramatic gorge walks in Crete. Emerging from the narrow gorge onto this luminous beach, with the sea stretching south toward North Africa, is one of the most rewarding moments the island has to offer.
Small Taverna
A small seasonal taverna operates at Marmara during summer, serving cold drinks, simple mezedes, and basic meals to hikers and boat visitors. After a long walk through the gorge, the prospect of a cold beer with your feet in the pebbles makes this one of the most welcome stops in southern Crete.
Marmara is best reached by completing the Aradena Gorge hike or by boat from nearby Loutro or Sfakia — a truly memorable destination either way.
