Venetian Fortifications

The Venetians began constructing the island's defensive walls in the early 16th century, recognising its strategic position at the entrance to Souda Bay. Thick stone bastions and artillery positions reflect the military architecture of the era. Much of the original Venetian structure still stands in remarkably good condition today.

Ottoman Additions

After the Ottomans took control of Crete in the 17th century, they expanded and adapted the island's fortifications for their own use. The layered architecture tells the story of successive occupations, with both Venetian and Ottoman elements clearly visible. The island served as a key defensive post well into the modern era.

The island sits within the vast natural harbour of Souda Bay, surrounded by calm, deep blue waters framed by rolling hills and the distant White Mountains.
